Massage for low back pain.
02 Feb 2009
Discounted rates for staff at the Sports Injury Clinic.
A review of studies of the use of massage to alleviate low back pain has shown that:
- In two recent studies, massage was superior to an inert therapy (sham treatment) for pain and function on both short and long-term follow-ups.
- In eight studies, massage was similar to exercises, and massage was superior to joint mobilization, relaxation therapy, physical therapy, acupuncture and self-care education.
- The beneficial effects of massage in patients with chronic low-back pain lasted at least one year after the end of the treatment.
