Quatuor Danel Lunchtime Concert

  • Schubert Quartet no. 10, in E flat, D87 (op. 125 no. 1)
  • Krzysztof Meyer Duet for Two Violins (first performance)

The first of a series of performances of Schubert’s early sunny quartets, this one composed at the age of 16, followed by the first performance of a duet by a senior Polish composer who befriended Shostakovich in the last years of his life and wrote one of the finest biographical studies of the Soviet master.

The university’s David Fallows, one of the world’s finest scholars of early music, introduces his transcriptions of music by the finest composer of the late-medieval period.

Songs by Carl Nielsen

Denmark's national composer wrote more than 200 songs, many of them in folk-popular style for singing at home or in music societies. Students and staff from the University and the RNCM combine to perform a selection of these national treasures in brand-new English translations.

Quatuor Danel Evening Concert

  • Mozart Quartet in D minor, K421
  • Josquin des Prez (transcribed David Fallows, first performances)
  • Beethoven Quartet in A minor, op. 132
  • Mozart’s ever-popular D minor, from the landmark succession of quartets dedicated to Haydn, followed by chansons from the 15th century.

The Danels then inaugurate their first Manchester cycle of late Beethoven quartets with the profound A minor, including the famous ‘Heiliger Dankgesang’.
