Spring and summer events from Centre for New Writing.

We are proud to announce our full programme of spring and summer events, which are booking now via:

The season includes a showcase of this year's writers in residence and appearances by our own Martin Amis and Geoff Ryman, as well visits by such names as Howard Jacobson, A L Kennedy, Jackie Kay and Helen Dunmore.

Literature Live

These unique events bring the best-known contemporary fiction-writers and poets to Manchester, to discuss and read from their work. Everyone is welcome, and tickets include discounts at the Blackwell bookstall and a complimentary drink at our wine receptions.

Events are held at the Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama unless otherwise stated.

  • Helen Dunmore and Peter Fallon
    Monday 23 February, 6.30pm

    Poet and novelist Dunmore was the first winner of the Orange Prize. Poet Fallon founded Ireland's Gallery Press, and was Villanova's inaugural Professor of Irish Studies.

  • LAUNCH OF THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR COSMOPOLITAN CULTURES (RICC): Jackie Kay and Joe Pemberton
    Monday 2 March, 6.30pm

    Kay's first poetry collection was Saltire Society Scottish First Book of the Year, and her debut novel won the Guardian Fiction prize. MA alumnus Pemberton's novel describes 1960s Manchester through a child's eyes.

  • A L Kennedy
    Monday 16 March, 6.30pm

    Kennedy's first book won the John Llewellyn Rhys and Saltire Society Scottish First Book of the Year prizes. Her most recent, Day, won the 2007 Costa prize.

Martin Amis Public Events

Leading novelist Martin Amis is our Professor of Creative Writing, and hosts a series of landmark discussions with other renowned writers and thinkers.

Please note that these events are held at the University's Whitworth Hall (Oxford Road, M13 9PL).

  • Literature and Britishness, with Howard Jacobson
    Thursday 12 February, 6.30pm

    Martin Amis and Manchester's Howard Jacobson will discuss how well the novel represents the nation, and how ideas of 'Britishness' have altered over the past half-century.

  • Literature and Suicide
    Friday 3 July, 6.30pm


    Martin Amis's classic 1984 novel, Money, was subtitled 'A suicide note', and it is a subject to which he has periodically returned in his later novels.

Summer in the City

The Centre will continue to host a range of events over the summer, both at the University and in the city centre.

  • 2008/09 writers in residence - Peter Sansom and Chris Killen
    Monday 29 June, 5pm


    2009 sees the publication of Sansom’s New and Selected Poems and Killen’s debut novel The Bird Room.

  • Fiction and poetry readings by Centre for New Writing MA students

    Join us at Manchester Central Library for this free showcase of work by this year's MA in poetry and fiction-writing students.

  • Geoff Ryman
    Wednesday 22 July, 1pm
    Manchester Central Library, St Peter's Square, Manchester M2 5PD

    Ryman's The Child Garden won the Arthur C Clarke, John W Campbell and British Science Fiction Association awards. His mainstream novel 253 won the Philip K Dick Memorial award.
