University wireless network renamed.
11 Nov 2008
New SSID from 2 December.
The University wireless network will be renamed from 'university' to 'University of Manchester' on 2 December 2008.
The current network name (SSID) of 'university' has been in place since the University first trialled wireless technologies. Since that trial, the wireless network has spread across our campuses and as such the generic SSID of 'university' is not descriptive enough for end users.
The new SSID of 'University of Manchester' will be pushed out to all the wireless access points in the early hours of Tuesday 2 December. Users will need to pick the new network name when they connect after the name change.
This is achieved in various ways depending on operating system and laptop manufacturer, but in general you are looking to find available networks and connect to the one identified as 'University of Manchester' (assuming your laptop or PDA has a wireless card and that it is enabled).
If you encounter any problems with connnecting to the wireless network, please contact the IT Servicedesk:
