Celebrating American music and Kevin Malone's 50th birthday.

Day of events featuring works by University composer on 21 November.

There will be a day of events celebrating American music and the 50th birthday of Dr Kevin Malone, composer and Senior Lecturer in Music, in the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall, Martin Harris Centre, on 21 November. The day is sponsored by the American Embassy in London and will feature Manchester's new music ensemble Vaganza.

Fittingly, the two concerts feature works by American composers with whom Kevin has studied, and various surprise events throughout the day.

Wednesday 21 November
Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall, Martin Harris Centre

  • 1.10-2pm: Free lunchtime launch concert. William Bolcom's "The Graceful Ghost", the premiere of Kevin Malone's piano quartet "American Terpsichore" and some excellent student works which show bold, imaginative ideas.
     
  • 2.30-6pm: Various sonic happenings and stations around the concert hall foyer.
     
  • 6.45pm: Pre-concert talk about ideas, aesthetics and influences which form foundations in Kevin's music.
     
  • 7.30-9.15pm: Evening concert. Dramatically staged performance of George Crumb's "Ancient Voices of Children". Also Christopher Rouse's "The Surma Ritornelli", "Morton Feldman's "Madam Press Died Last Week at Ninety", Malone's snarling "The Radio Song" from the 1998 ISCM festival and more premieres of imaginative and bold student works.

  • 4.15pm: Kevin Malone will give a Composer's Forum on his work in general.

Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall

  • 7.30pm: Quatuor Danel will premiere Kevin Malone's full-length string quartet, "Opus opera" which has been funded by the Arts Council of Great Britain. The concert also features Beethoven's C sharp minor quartet op.131 and Webern's Langsamer Satz.

5-6.15pm: Psappha will perform the seriously-deranged work "Three Historic Monuments" (commissioned from Kevin Malone) in the Beat the Rush Hour concert.
