The Christie: New name for the Christie Hospital.

25 Sep 2008

Marking the beginning of an exciting era for cancer care centre.

Following a widespread consultation and formal approval, the Christie Hospital has changed its name to The Christie.

Of the 4,000 people who gave their preference on a possible new name, 77% supported a change with over a third of those choosing The Christie.

The new name will better represent the full range of work that The Christie undertakes, such as research and education, and its developments. These developments are part of a five year strategy 2008-2013 which focuses on improving clinical outcomes, developing networked services and world class research. They include new £17 million radiotherapy centres in other parts of the region to deliver patient care closer to people’s homes. The first is currently being built in Oldham and will be followed by a second in Salford. Plans for expansion and enhancement research include a new £35 million patient treatment centre, due to open in 2010, which will include the largest early clinical trials unit in the world.

The new name was approved last week at the annual members’ meeting and by Monitor, the independent regulator.
