Online Assessment of Mathematics.
15 Jul 2008
Information session on software packages on 25 July.
You are invited to an afternoon session on Friday 25 July at 2pm in C1, George Begg Building, on the subject of online formative assessment by questions where the desired answer is a mathematical equation.
In computer aided learning and assessment using mathematical expressions it is highly desirable for the software to be capable of accepting and processing mathematical input. Furthermore feedback should be appropriate to an individual student's particular response to a question.
Generic virtual learning environments such as WebCT and Blackboard are incapable of processing mathematical input on their own. Typically in creating assessment material on mathematics or with mathematical elements for these systems we are restricted to asking multiple choice questions or accepting only numerical answers. We are even more restricted in the feedback we can provide. We would like to be able to accept and analyze algebraic input.
Our team has been looking at various specialist pieces of software suitable for assessment of mathematical topics and would like to present some findings and results at this session. In particular we wish to demonstrate the capabilities of two packages: STACK and WeBWorK.
Who should attend?
Anyone across the university with an interest in the teaching of mathematics and numerate disciplines using mathematics; anyone with an interest in computer assisted assessment and online learning.
