Back To Basics: What does it really feel like to be a first year student?
The University of Manchester branch of the AUA (Association of University Administrators) will be holding an open and free of charge event on Wednesday 30 July from 12noon to 2pm, with lunch provided. All administrative staff are invited to join us.
Marcia Ody, Teaching and Learning Manager, and William Carey, Teaching and Learning Adviser (Students as Partners) at The University of Manchester, will be presenting their immensely well-received 2008 AUA National Conference working session on the first year experience.
Back to basics: what does it really feel like to be a first year student?
This interactive session will return participants to the basics of the first year experience: Who are our first year students? What does it feel like to be a first year student? What do first years need to know and when?
Through experiential learning and exploratory discussion, the session will illustrate how returning to basics can positively assist staff (and higher year students) to strategically plan and implement appropriate support and development to assist the transition of first year students into higher education.
Learning aims
- To gain a deeper understanding of the first year student experience
- To identify key transition points in the student lifecycle and understand the related support and development requirements
- to identify how you can use simple techniques to re-evaluate the first year experience in your own institution to enhance practice
The session will last approximately 90 minutes and lunch will be provided. To attend, please contact:
