"Tracing Your Ancestry": Friends of Tabley House event.
02 May 2008
Talk by archivist John Benson at Tabley House on 14 May.
Most of us are fascinated by "where we came from". Are there dukes or dustmen back in our family history? Merchants or mutineers? Heroes or horse-thieves? Secret affairs? Public interest has been greatly increased in recent years by television programmes such as "Who Do You Think You Are?"
For their latest fund-raiser, the Friends of Tabley House have invited an expert speaker to show how you go about finding answers to questions about your family history.
On Wednesday 14 May at 7.30pm, archivist John Benson will explore the hugely fascinating area of "Tracing Your Ancestry". He will cover the main sources that are useful for investigating families - and where to find them. He will make particular reference to the Leicester-Warren family of Tabley as an example.
John is an Archivist at Cheshire and Chester Archives and Local Studies - a major resource for family historians. The collections in Duke Street, Chester attract 8,000 visitors a year! Records relating to the history of Cheshire, dating back as far as the 12th century, are preserved and made accessible to the public.
John says he will also be happy to answer questions about family histories (or, he says, anything else!). Afterwards, there will be the chance to chat over a leisurely glass of wine.
Tickets are £8 (£6 for Friends) from:

Although the Friends of Tabley have been stunningly successful over the years in raising money for refurbishment projects in this unique House, they now need more members to help them progress. "If you want to help conserve and restore a unique part of Cheshire's heritage and have a lot of fun in the process - join the Friends!" says Chairman Nick Payne.
Membership is £15 a year (£25 couples, £5 students). To join, contact:
