What's the answer? Problem-solving skills unit.

06 May 2008

Helping students to understand the process of solving complex problems.

If your undergraduates are constantly asking you what is 'the right answer' then maybe the new 10 credit unit 'real-World Problem-Solving' will help.

This unit helps students to understand the process involved in solving complex problems. It enables them to better define and ultimately solve such problems. Through a novel, interactive approach to learning, students are given a framework for future, creative problem-solving.  They discover that problems can have several 'correct' answers. The activities students do and the skills they learn in this unit can be used in all areas of their programme and indeed in their life outside university.

The unit involves both group and individual working. Assessment is via a reflective log and report, the presentation of an academic poster and a short academic paper. As such it is ideal for preparing students for project work and their final year.
