Concerts 1-9 May and Quatuor Danel Open House weekend 13-15 June.
Our next concert in the Walter Carroll series of FREE lunchtime concerts is on Thursday 1 May at 1.10pm - Gamelan Degung - which is a small gamelan orchestra unique to Sunda, the mountainous region of West Java, Indonesia. The concert includes a selection of traditional and contemporary Sundanese repertoire, as well as original compositions by members of the group.
Vaganza (formally the New Music Ensemble) present the Composer's Showcase Day on Friday 2 May with two concerts of outstanding music from our endlessly inventive student composers - including film music specially composed for the event. The lunchtime concert, which is FREE is at 1.10pm, and the evening concert begins at 7pm.
We have a return visit from the BBC Philharmonic on 7 May. Gianandrea Noseda, Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic introduces players from the Orchestra in the next of a continuing series of chamber concerts. The programme will be Mendelssohn's String Octet and Shostakovich's Two Pieces for String Octet, Op. 11, Prelude and Scherzo. These concerts give you the chance to hear Gianandrea talk about the Orchestra's work, hear some exceptional playing from our players, enjoy a free glass of wine after the concert and an opportunity to talk to the BBC Philharmonic players and Gianandrea.
The University of Manchester's internationally renowned resident string quartet - Quatuor Danel, return for two concerts next week - on Thursday 8 May at 1.10pm they present Haydn's Quartet in E flat, Op. 76 No. 6 and Weinberg's Quartet in D flat, Op. 124 (UK premiere) - tickets are FREE. This is followed on Friday 9 May at 7pm with a concert featuring pieces by Beethoven and Schumann - please check our website for further details.
Looking further ahead, we have just announced details of the Quatuor Danel Open House weekend which is taking place Friday 13 to Sunday 15 June at the Martin Harris Centre. This three day event is a fabulous music-making opportunity with the Quatuor Danel and Professor David Fanning coaching students and members of the public, directing sight-reading sessions and taking part in informal concerts alongside those ensembles who wish to perform in public.
