Six-week Chinese calligraphy course.

From 1 May at the Confucius Institute.

Calligraphy (shufa) is the traditional art of writing Chinese characters, the quintessence of Chinese culture. After centuries of creation and evolution, calligraphy has become a unique form of art. Chinese scripts are generally divided into five styles: seal script, official script, regular script, cursive script and running script.

This six-week course will focus on how to use the Chinese brush and ink, the basic strokes of Chinese writing and the structure of constructing Chinese characters. You will be introduced to Regular Script and practice calligraphy writing in regular script. By the end of the course, you will produce your own calligraphy work to decorate your home and office. No previous knowledge of Chinese is required.

Dates/Time: Thursday 6-7.30pm from 1 May to 5 June 2008

Fees: £40 (including Chinese brush, ink and practicing paper)
