First in new series showcasing the contribution of mathematics to society.
4-7pm: Lectures in Schuster Building and drinks reception in Alan Turing Building.
This inaugural Mathematics in Society Lecture sponsored by BP, is the first in a new lecture series hosted by the School of Mathematics which is designed to showcase the contribution of mathematics to art, music, literature, economic, social and political life.
Professor Peter Diggle from the Department of Medicine at Lancaster University will deliver a talk titled "A Tale of Two Parasites". His talk will describe how spatial statistical modelling is contributing to the implementation of The African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) policy.
The second talk comes from Professor Judith Howard, (Chairman of the Chemistry Department at Durham University) chair of the working group which has just completed a report for the Royal Society titled "A Higher Degree of Concern". This report looks at the future supply and demand for science, technology and mathematics graduates. This talk will highlight important recent trends in the teaching and research training functions of HE and steps we must take, urgently, to ensure that it delivers these requirements over the next decade.
The lecture is free to attend and open to all University of Manchester staff, students and alumni, as well as to the general public. Places are limited so pre-booking is compulsory.
