Keeping You Secure: Cyber Safety at our University
13 Dec 2024
In today's digital world, being safe online is crucial for you and our University
At The University of Manchester, we're working hard to ensure you have the knowledge and tools to protect yourself from cyber threats.
Spotting Phishing Emails
Phishing is when scammers try to trick you into sharing sensitive information. We've partnered with the information Governance Office and Khipu to provide an easy online training course on spotting and stopping phishing. You can access the training on the cyber security page of the IT Services website. Knowing how to recognise these threats is your first line of defence.
If you receive any suspicious emails report it to IT Services. Forward the email as an attachment to phishing@manchester.ac.uk. Stay alert and help keep our community safe.
IT Support Verification Process
Sometimes, our IT support colleagues may need to access your University computer remotely, however it is very unlikely that they will call you unless you have already logged a ticket with the IT Support Centre either by telephone or the Connect website.
After logging a ticket, you will have received an email from "IT Service Desk" with a reference number. If you do receive a call from an IT Support colleague, you are welcome to ask the caller to confirm the reference number. This will usually start with "INC" or "REQ".
The IT Support colleague will then ask you to click the RemoteIT 'calling card' icon which is present on the desktop of all University managed computers, and give you a six-digit PIN to enter.
Cyber Security Tools
We use 2-factor authentication from Duo to add an extra layer of protection. This additional step helps verify your identity and secures your access to University services.
Staying Safe Online
If you encounter suspicious activity or suspect a phishing attempt, contact the IT Support Centre at +44 (0) 161 306 5544 immediately. Our team is here to help you promptly with any cyber security concerns.
Remember, your awareness is key to a safe digital environment. With your help, we can all stay protected from cyber threats.
