Transgender Day of Remembrance

19 Nov 2024

Remembering those who have lost their lives to transphobia

 Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR)

For the twelfth year running, our University will mark Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) to honour those who have lost their lives to transphobia in the last 12 months.

This year, there will be a space for reflection in the Main Library on the Wednesday, 20 November  Throughout the day, there will be the opportunity to visit the stall, ‘light’ a candle, leave optional donations and get information on where you can find support.  We also have an anonymous TDOR Padlet if you are unable to attend in person where you can record your thoughts and respectful tributes. The padlet includes links to support and an optional link to donate to Sparkle The National Transgender Charity.

Although we are very fortunate to live and work in a society and community where Equality and Diversity is championed, there are still many barriers still faced by the trans community and, as recent global events have demonstrated, transphobia is still sadly prevalent in the UK and worldwide.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is a time for us to reflect on those who have lost their lives due to transphobia and transphobic violence in the last year. During this difficult time, we stand by our trans staff, allies and their community.

Looking to the future, we will continue to make positive changes to ensure that our trans colleagues and students can thrive and fulfil their full potential as valued and celebrated members of our university community.

The number of countries with laws and legislation which recognise gender identity and expression is increasing, but many do not recognise the trans community.  Find out more about individual countries.

Where can I find support at the University of Manchester?

If you witness or experience transphobia or discrimination of any kind, you can use our reporting system, Report and Support, to log an anonymous report or to get support from a trained advisor. You can also download the SafeZone App to help keep you safe and to give you extra peace of mind.

Our LGBT+ Network Group, ALLOUT, are available to support any member of the LGBT+ community; they hold regular meetings and are a space for LGBT+ colleagues to connect and find community.
