Wi-Fi Transformation: Phase One complete

12 Nov 2024

We are proud to announce the successful completion of phase one of the Wi-Fi Transformation Project, a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to providing a world-class digital infrastructure.

Wifi

This marks the beginning of our journey towards a fully resilient and high-speed network, setting the stage for future enhancements.

A seamless, secure, and robust network

The Wi-Fi Transformation Project was initiated to address the growing demand for reliable and efficient internet access across our campus.

Through the installation and enhancement of Wi-Fi across 47 buildings, we have marked a new era of connectivity for our students and staff.

Key achievements from the last 12 months

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Many of our locations now boast enhanced Wi-Fi coverage, helping you get online from the places you need to.
  • High-Speed Connectivity: The upgraded network supports high-speed connections, crucial for activities such as online learning, research, and virtual meetings.
  • Security Enhancements: Implementing advanced security measures ensures that our network is secure, protecting sensitive data and maintaining compliance with industry standards.
  • Network Resilience: Significant work has been carried out to provide network resilience to individual buildings. Currently, 81 out of 88 campus buildings have dual connections, with the remaining buildings to be completed by the end of 2024.
  • UPS Provision: We’ve installed new, fully maintained Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS). This will ensure minimal disruption and continuous access to essential online resources for students and staff.
  • Next Steps: With Phase one complete, we are now preparing for the next phase, which includes further enhancements and expansions to ensure even greater coverage and reliability.

To provide a visual representation of the project’s scope, we have introduced an interactive Google Map showcasing the locations that have benefitted from upgraded Wi-Fi. This marks the beginning of our journey, with further enhancements across the University to follow in 2025.

To further illustrate the impact and future vision of Network2030, we are excited to share the film below, highlighting the transformative journey of our Network at the University of Manchester.

Looking ahead

With the completion of this phase one, we are now ready to move on to the next stage of the Wi-Fi Transformation Project.

We will remain committed to driving improvements, including the installation of new fibre optic cabling, enhancing our current fibre infrastructure, and undertaking Wi-Fi Transformation across all remaining University buildings.

By 2030, we aim to have all 81 buildings connected with two physically separate fibre cable paths, ensuring continuous connectivity even if one path is disrupted. This setup will provide a fully resilient network infrastructure, delivering a world-class network that empowers our community to achieve their best.
