Teams Voice Project Update – October 2024

29 Oct 2024

The Teams Voice Project continues to enhance communication and collaboration across the University by moving to Microsoft Teams for voice calls.

We have put together a helpful guide on the key activities so far, and how you can get involved.

Non-voice devices (NVDs)

We’ve been collaborating with stakeholders across the University to identify any NVDs still in use, such as lift phones, fax machines, and alarms. Although great progress has been made, we still need to identify 160 potential NVDs. If you think a device in your area might be analogue, please complete this form to notify the project.

Conference and meeting rooms

The project team has surveyed over 800 meeting rooms to identify the use of analogue conference phones.  61 devices were discovered, which will be recycled along with old handsets. Media Service will now manage all conferencing technology across campus. Read more on our support site.

University switchboard

The University switchboard is moving to a new application, which will involve transferring its current database of records of contact information. No additional information will be collected, and the data will not be used for any other purpose. Read more on our Teams Voice support site.

Transforming telecoms at Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS)

Throughout 2024, the Teams Voice Project has been installing new Teams handsets across the campus. The team has successfully installed 65 handsets in AMBS and The Executive Education Centre, overcoming significant technical challenges. Read more about our work on AMBS

Handset recycling

We are decommissioning old phone handsets across campus. This initiative is crucial for upgrading our telephony systems and supporting our sustainability goals. To date, we have recycled over 5,000 old handsets, but we need your help in achieving our goal of 10,000 by the end of this calendar year. Watch our video featuring Registrar, Patrick Hackett, here.
