Recycling your old phone handsets

As part of the Teams Voice (External Calling) project, we are decommissioning old phone handsets across campus.

This initiative is crucial for upgrading our telephony systems and is a big stride towards our sustainability goals. Patrick Hackett, Registrar and Chief Operating Officer highlights the importance of recycling your old handsets and how you can participate in the scheme in this short video.

Progress and achievements

To date, we have recycled nearly 6,000 handsets, translating to 2.8 tonnes of old phone waste. Our goal is to recycle 13,000 old handsets, and with your help, we can achieve this target.

Where to recycle your old handsets

We have set up three convenient disposal zones across campus:

  • Arthur Lewis Building: Near the main reception/foyer on the left-hand side.
  • Ellen Wilkinson Building: Near the entrance opposite the Samuel Alexander building, to the left-hand side.
  • Stopford Building: Near the entrance podium, near the turnstiles.

How to recycle

Dropping off your old handset is a simple process that takes just a few minutes. Please check your areas for any old handsets, including disused offices or meeting rooms, and bring them to the disposal zones.

What happens to recycled handsets

All old telephone waste will be sent for electrical waste recycling, ensuring nothing goes to landfill.

Timeline and future steps

We aim to complete the handset rollout and recycling campaign by the end of this calendar year. After recycling, we will continue to support the deployment of Teams handsets and ensure all areas across campus are upgraded.
