Applications streaming software launched in PC clusters
02 Sep 2024
Our new applications streaming software, AppsAnywhere is now live on cluster PCs. This service allows more flexible delivery of teaching and learning applications across campus, which makes it simpler to find and launch the software you need.
Students and teaching colleagues can use the AppsAnywhere portal to access all software applications from our IT Services-managed cluster PCs (including lectern PCs).
View the AppsAnywhere support page for how to access the portal and use its features.
Demonstrations
We are running AppsAnywhere demonstrations for faculty colleagues in September. Details of how to sign-up will be shared on faculty intranets this week.
Which applications are available?
Around 40 applications are available to stream from every cluster PC across campus, and the rest are available on PCs locally, as they were before – all are accessed via the AppsAnywhere portal. As the 2024/25 academic year progresses, more applications will become available for streaming, making our ‘open all hours’ and accessible clusters even more convenient for students. You can view a list of applications and locations available on the support page.
Licencing and export control regulations have been reflected in the decisions made around which applications are available to stream and which are installed on the PCs themselves.
How academics helped shape the design
Academic representatives defined and validated system requirements to shape the design and were involved in testing the software to ensure it meets the needs of our students and teaching colleagues.
Our new applications streaming service has been delivered by the Evolve programme’s Colleague and Student Compute (C&SC) project, to provide a foundation for more flexible delivery of applications in the future. Information on the Evolve programme can be found on the Evolve page on StaffNet.
