Stronger together – support following recent events
08 Aug 2024
Updated Thursday 8 August 17:00 - The University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Students’ Union stand united in condemning the horrifying acts of hate and racism witnessed in some parts of the UK over recent days.
We understand that these recent events may be deeply upsetting and distressing. Please know that you are not alone in your feelings, and that support is available.
Diversity is our strength here at the University of Manchester. We take immense pride in our diverse communities – at the University, within the city region, nationally and globally - and we are resolute in our commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all.
Communities standing together
Unfortunately, in times of tragedy such as the recent attack in Southport, a small minority have chosen to fracture communities, sow division, spread misinformation and carry out abhorrent acts of Islamophobia, xenophobia and racism. In these most tragic moments, we have witnessed the real strength of local communities, pulling together and collectively standing against hate. We stand with these communities and utterly condemn any threat of violence or hate towards any community.
Continually monitoring events
Please be reassured that we are monitoring events, following guidance from the Government, and working closely with our partners at Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Police, as well as our own Campus Support and Security colleagues.
We want to ensure all members of our University feel safe and supported on campus. We recognise that some of our colleagues, students, and visitors may feel cautious as they travel to and from campus and around the city centre, so we wanted to reiterate the support available.
Support services
The University provides a professional Counselling and Mental Health Service, Health Hero - free, confidential support, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and a Multi Faith Chaplaincy which welcomes people of all faith and none.
Staying safe
Our free SafeZone app allows you to quickly and discreetly call for help and share your GPS location if anyone is in danger. On The University of Manchester, MMU or University of Salford campuses you’ll be connecting directly to University Security. Off campus, SafeZone will connect you directly to the emergency services.
Reporting incidents
If you or someone you know has experienced or witnessed any form of hate or have a safeguarding concern, we would urge you to report this to the University’s Report and Support Team where trained advisors are ready to provide support. You can give your name or do this anonymously.
You can also report hate crimes to Greater Manchester Police via their website, by calling 101 or by visiting a police station.
We will update this page with any further information.
