Celebrating Manchester Pride

02 Aug 2024

Celebrate inclusivity and LGBTQ+ rights this August

University of Manchester staff with the Pride Flag

As we celebrate the University's bicentenary this year, colleagues across the University will have the opportunity to get involved in a variety of events taking place in August to mark Manchester Pride.

The theme for this year’s Manchester Pride is ‘Buzzin’ To Be Queer – A Hive Of Progress.’ This theme celebrates the iconic Manchester Bee, symbolising unity, hard work, and progress.

Patrick Hackett, Registrar, Secretary and Chief Operating Officer and Executive sponsor of ALLOUT, our LGBT+ Network Group, said: 'Not only is Manchester Pride an integral part of Manchester’s cultural identity, but it is also a powerful symbol of our commitment to equality and inclusion, reinforced in our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy.

As we reflect this year, on the hard work and progress made, let’s continue to put equality and inclusion into the heart of everything we do here at the University.  I hope you enjoy Manchester Pride and encourage you all to take part.'

Get involved at Pride Weekend

The University will once again be entering the Manchester Pride Parade on Saturday, 24 August with the first solo entry since 2019. There will also be a stall on Community Lane on Sunday, 25 August, which will give us an opportunity to engage with members of the public and share experiences of working and/or studying at one of Stonewall's Top 100 Employers.

Events

Thursday, 8 August

LGBTQ+ Education in Primary/Secondary Settings , 12 noon, Engineering Building B: 2B.025

Join Jo Brassington (they/them) for a guest lecture on LGBTQ+ inclusion work in primary and secondary education settings.

Friday, 9 August

Virtually at the Rylands: Looking at our LGBTQ+ Collections (online), 2pm

Hosted online by Jack (Exhibitions and Public Engagement with Research and Assistant) and MT (Reader Services Assistant), this online event will guide you through some of our LGBTQ+ collections, from the punk scene of 1970s London to the world of community theatre in the early twentieth century. The event continues the legacy of the We Have Always Been Here exhibition, by giving the opportunity for the lesser-known queer voices in our collections to shout above the rest.

Tuesday, 20 August

Pride Parade ‘Construction Evening’, 3pm to 6pm, GA.056 Nancy Rothwell Building

Come and meet this year's Pride Committee in an informal session to start the festivities! We’ll provide the materials and refreshments; all you need to do is turn up prepared to create flowers and placards which will show your pride and the message you want to share with the community on parade day. Arrival at any point, stay as long or as little as you like.

Thursday, 22 August

Drag in the UK today: Lessons from Libel - Fireside Chat with RuPaul's Drag Race UK's Crystal 5p to 6pm, Engineering A: GA.056

RuPaul's Drag Race's Crystal will join AllOut & FSE's EDI Team to discuss her experiences in drag, her recent legal case against Laurence Fox, and all things drag in the current climate.
