Development opportunities for PGR supervisors

Expanded continuing professional development (CPD) - helping supervisors to provide the best support for PGRs
We know that supervisors have the biggest influence on the PGR experience and last year’s PGR Voice survey showed our supervisors here at Manchester already do a great job.
Supporting our supervisors to develop the skills, networks, and perspectives needed to deliver excellence in PGR supervision is a University priority. Therefore, from October 2024, Manchester Doctoral College (MDC) requires all PGR supervisors to engage with at least one supervision-focused continuing professional development (CPD) opportunity each academic year.
This is important across the sector. UKRI's New Deal for PGRs emphasises the importance of quality training for PGR supervisors and the crucial role of supervision in the PGR experience. Research councils are requiring commitment to supervision CPD/training in funding calls. And, as part of a fresh approach, Research England recently awarded £4.6 million to the RSVP Project to transform the culture and practice of research supervision. Our University, in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University and The University of Salford, has been selected to take part in the project.
Training opportunities
To support CPD for our supervisors, we have integrated a variety of opportunities led by the Researcher Development team, Faculty Doctoral Academies, and other teams from across the University. Details can be found at:
Additional support
Further support is also available via the supervisor toolkit and a number of workshops are available to support supervisors with applications for UKCGE recognition.
If you have any questions, please contact your Faculty Doctoral Academy or the Researcher Development team.
