Connecting devices to the telecoms network – what you need to know

Please inform the telecoms team of any telecoms-enabled devices that need to be connected to the network

It is important that the Telecoms Team are informed of any telecoms-enabled device (a device which makes calls out, whether a voice device such as a phone or a non voice device such as an alarm) which needs to be attached to the network.

In the past, if Telecoms were not told, a device may still work when plugged in. As we move all telecoms onto the digital network, this will no longer work. Telecoms must be informed of any device and the port it will be plugged into so that:

  • The port will need to be activated
  • A record needs to be kept of what is connected to each port

This includes new devices to be connected and devices which require moving from one port to another.

This means for example, that taking a phone out of one socket and plugging it into another as was done in the past, will not work.
