Make a difference in your community as a School Governor

12 Jun 2024

Find out what it's like to be involved in school governance at an introductory webinar on Wednesday, 17 July

Looking for a dynamic volunteering role that furthers your professional development and provides an opportunity to gain valuable skills?

Our University has teamed up with education charity Governors for Schools and will be running an introductory webinar on Wednesday, 17 July, 5 - 6pm where you can find out about key responsibilities of those involved in school governance, and the professional and personal benefits of taking on such a role.

As part of our social responsibility strategy, we are working to increase the number of University staff and alumni serving as governors in local schools. Our School Governor Initiative enables schools and colleges to benefit from the vast range of skills and experiences that our staff and alumni can bring to a Board of Governors.

Unsure about what school governance involves? You’re not alone. Many schools are missing out on the strategic support they need due to a lack of knowledge surrounding governance. You don’t have to be a parent or education professional to join a board. Governors from a wide range of backgrounds are encouraged to volunteer to support and challenge a school’s headteacher and senior leader, analysing issues such as budget, behaviour, attendance, wellbeing, academic progress, and more.

By joining a board, you will gain valuable professional skills such as budget management and critical thinking, while applying your current skills to support a vital cause. As one of Governors for Schools’ placed primary school governors notes: "Although I wasn’t expecting to become chair of a committee so soon, the opportunity came up after a year and I decided to go for it. Chairing the finance committee has been fantastic and played really well in my professional career."

Governors for Schools ensures volunteers are matched with schools requiring their specific needs and experiences. After you’ve submitted an application, one of the charity’s friendly partnership managers will support you through the process, going the extra mile to place you in a suitable school. You can read more about the difference you could make as a governor on the website.
