04 Jun 2024
Dive into the world of teaching and learning at our University during this two-day internal conference on Wednesday, 26 and Thursday, 27 June
Free to attend for all staff and students, the Conference will take place at University Place on Wednesday, 26 and Thursday, 27 June 2024. It is a hybrid event, providing attendees with the flexibility to participate in plenaries and parallel sessions either in-person or live via Zoom.
The Conference is an excellent opportunity for our teaching and learning community to come together, share insights, and learn from each other's experiences in advancing teaching and learning practices.
An exciting and varied Conference programme will feature many interactive opportunities to take part:
- Wicked problem sets – one hour sessions in which the speaker introduces an issue/big question linked to the themes of the conference with a brief presentation, before participants act as an action learning set, joining in a roundtable discussion on the topic and putting together a summary of thoughts and recommendations at the end.
- Standard paper presentations – paper presentations on a specific topic, 15-20 minutes in length, with 5 minutes for questions.
- Poster presentations – posters will be exhibited during the conference, with presenters on hand to provide a short spoken presentation.
- Lightening talks – up to 5 minutes, featuring a maximum of 20 slides. These are short, snappy papers that capture the essence of an activity, initiative, a pedagogic passion, or something that went well or didn’t work out in a teaching and learning context.
All activities in the programme will be based around the following key themes:
- Student partnership and the student voice: How can we approach teaching and learning in partnership with our students, ensuring their perspective, experience and potential is fully embraced?
- Exploring assessment: What does effective and authentic assessment look like at UoM? What practices, processes and pedagogy can we use to ensure assessment and importantly feedback on assessment supports learning?
- Sustainability and the socially responsible curriculum: Where do pedagogical practice and theory intersect with social responsibility and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals? How can we bring in elements of service learning or other community led pedagogies? How can we encourage and enable students to drive social responsibility forward in their learning?
- The future of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education: Critical reflections on current practice and positive changes for the sector’s long-term future, for example what is the role of AI in the future of HE? What roles will lifelong learning play? How does the sector need to support students beginning their education journey to support their future learning?
