Richard King in Conversation with Abigail Ward on Arthur Russell's life
03 May 2024
Richard King talks to Abigail Ward about his new book Travels Over Feeling, an exploration of legendary composer Arthur Russell’s life.
Creative Manchester and Blackwell’s Manchester are delighted to co-host the book launch event of Richard King’s new book Travels Over Feeling, celebrating the extraordinary life and work of American composer Arthur Russell.
The event, to be held in Blackwell’s Manchester just off University Green on Thursday, 23 May, promises an insightful conversation between Richard King and acclaimed DJ and curator Abigail Ward.
Arthur Russell, hailed by the Guardian as "One of the 20th century's true musical visionaries," left an indelible mark on the music scene with his innovative compositions spanning avant-garde, disco, art pop, and folk genres. Across a twenty-year career Russell created a pioneering body of work that defied classification and continues to influence the music of today. Resistant to the idea of genre, his talent allowed him to excel in any number of styles and dialogues.
Travels Over Feeling is the result of Richard King's extensive research into Russell's New York Public Library archive, featuring hand-written scores, lyrics, photos, and interviews with collaborators and loved ones.
Tickets are available for £3.50 or free with the purchase of the book, which will also be on sale at the venue. Richard King will be signing copies after the talk, and for those unable to attend, signed copies can be arranged by contacting the bookshop.
Staff and students of The University of Manchester can attend the event for free by entering the discount code ‘students100’ at the checkout.
