Opening up existing Faculty/School/Centre-based lectures to colleagues across the University

A new initiative is under way to run a series of 'Interfaculty Lectures', opening up existing Faculty/School/Centre-based lectures to colleagues across the University.

The series began on 17 October with a CIDRA-organised lecture by Professor Judith Walkowitz (Simon Visiting Professor from Johns Hopkins University).

Two more lectures will take place this semester as part of the Interfaculty Lectures series:

Narratives of the self in a post-genomic age - persons, genes, brains and drugs

Nikolas Rose, Martin White Professor of Sociology and Director of the BIOS Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science

Exploring some of the new narratives of personhood that are emerging as developments in molecular biology, genetics and the neurosciences generate new ways in which individuals can identify themselves: in terms of genomic susceptibilities, risks and probabilities; in terms of DNA-based kinship relations and familial genealogies; in terms of their 'real identity' (on or off psychiatric drugs, with our without 'cognitive enhancements').  In the intersection of these developments, the very ideas of normality and abnormality, and their consequences, are mutating.  Rather than explain these in terms of underlying social processes, Professor Rose will suggest that some 'superficial' and descriptive approaches are needed to map these new fields of possibility.
