Pause. Check. Protect - helping students be aware of financial scams

Opening new bank accounts, paying fees, and making international transactions can all provide an opportunity for students to be targeted, especially if many of these activities are something they are doing for the first time. 

The updated Scams and Risks webpage has a range of useful information about common types of scams, spotting the red flags and tips for students to stay safe and protected.   

Reporting scams or suspicious activity 

We’re signposting students to report fraudulent activity in a number of ways. 

If they have been contacted by a scammer pertaining to be from the University, in relation to payments like tuition or accommodation fees, students can report it to us via Report & Support. They can also contact Action Fraud to report any criminal activity, including scams that are not University-related.  

Staff can directly report any scams that may be University-related by emailing Campus Support and Security (security@manchester.ac.uk).  

Staff or students concerned about the security of an IT account, computer or University IT service should call the IT Support Centre on 0161 306 5544 for help. The IT Services website has comprehensive advice on cyber security including how to recognise and report phishing emails. We’d strongly encourage you to take a few minutes and complete our phishing awareness training too.
