This event will take place on Wednesday, 17 April, at Uni Place_4.206 from 13.00-14.00 with the option for you to join us in-person or online.
Prof Jackie Carter is a Professor in Statistical Literacy at The University of Manchester, is a disability advocate, The University’s EDI Academic Lead for Disability, and is an award-winning woman for Data & Tech. With a career marked by pioneering contributions to her field, Prof Carter will share insights on navigating academia, advocating for gender equity, and fostering inclusive research environments.
In addition, we also welcome Prof Helen Pankhurst CBE @helenPankhurst. Helen Pankhurst CBE is a development and international women’s rights activist working as an advisor to CARE International – primarily in Ethiopia, where Helen was born, and in the UK. She is also a Professor at MMU and the First Chancellor of the University of Suffolk. Helen holds honorary doctorates from Edge Hill University and from the University of Manchester. The granddaughter of Sylvia, great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst, Helen carries on the legacy. This has included involvement in the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, engagement with and a cameo role in the 2015 film Suffragette.
Helen convenes the Centenary Action [centenaryaction.org.uk] (a coalition addressing the barriers to women in politics and campaigning for a gender equal parliament by 2028 – the Centenary of Equal Franchise). Likewise, she convenes GM4Women2028 [gm4women2028.org] (a charity looking at data and the lives of women and girls in Greater Manchester).
Publications include the book: Deeds Not Words, the Story of Women’s Rights, Then and Now (2018).
This event will offer a unique opportunity for dialogue, reflection, and connection. Attendees will have the chance to engage directly with Prof Carter and Prof Pankhurst through a moderated conversation, followed by an interactive Q&A session. There will also be plenty of time for networking after the event.
Join the conversation; we hope to see you there!
