New in conversation series to encourage open and honest discussion across equality, diversity and inclusion
We are proud to announce the launch of a new series of in conversation pieces hosted by the Directorate of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). ‘Let’s talk’ encourages members of our diverse University community to have an open and honest discussion about topics right across EDI.
Banji Adewumi, Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion said “Our ‘Let’s talk’ series aims to prompt further conversations to help overcome many of the barriers that colleagues face in the workplace. I invite you to get involved in the discussion and learn more about our diverse University community’s lived experience of belonging.”
The series will include blogs, videos, podcasts, recommended reading and more to cover a range of topics spanning all our Equality groups.
Jackie Carter, Professor of Statistical Literacy and University Academic Lead for Disability, who produced the first episode said: “When I took on the role as University Academic Lead for Disability, I was determined to raise the voices of disabled staff and students at The University of Manchester. Through the ‘Let’s Talk’ series of conversations, there is a platform for those of us with protected characteristics to raise awareness of the everyday challenges we face, as well as the extraordinary strengths we bring to our roles. Academics, professional services, students at all levels can learn so much from listening. But the real power of these conversations is in the actions we commit to – to bring about a more inclusive culture to work and study in.”
Let's talk about neurodiversity
The first conversation between PJ Hemmaway, Chief Information Officer and Julia Zieba, Graduate Intern, focussed on the lived experience of being neurodivergent at the University. PJ and Julia explore both the difficulties and the strengths of navigating a world built for neurotypical people.
PJ and Julia have both committed to taking action to achieve positive change.
How will I find out about new episodes?
All conversations will be shared on the Directorate of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion StaffNet pages and will be promoted on StaffNet. More conversations are planned for throughout the year.

The next conversation, between Professor Colette Fagan, Vice-President for Research and Laura Howard, a PGR in the Archaeology department and co-chair of our Disabled Staff Network, will be shared in April and unpacks living with cognitive and physical disabilities.
