University response to UKRI announcement to increase PGR stipend

14 Feb 2024

University to increase investment in postgraduate researchers by raising the minimum stipend for 2024/25 to £19,237 (full time equivalent)

We are pleased to announce that the University is increasing its investment in Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs) by raising the minimum stipend (the annual salary) for 2024/25 to £19,237 full time equivalent. This applies to all PGRs who are on a studentship funded directly by the University.

The rise is in line with the increase to the minimum stipend provided by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to all UKRI-funded PGRs. This increase will take place for PGRs in receipt of a University of Manchester (wholly or partly) funded studentship, who are starting or continuing their studies from 1 October 2024.

If you are wholly funded by other external sponsors, that haven’t yet announced that they are also increasing the stipend in line with UKRI, please liaise with those funders directly to confirm stipends for 2024/25.

Support available

Living Cost Support Fund

We provide support to all PGRs through the Living Cost Support Fund.

Any PGRs who are experiencing financial difficulty can apply for support with costs like private accommodation, utilities, food shopping, childcare etc.
