Holocaust Memorial Day – Saturday, 27 January
26 Jan 2024
Reflecting on the Holocaust
Holocaust Memorial Day takes place each year on 27, January.
The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945.
Holocaust Memorial Day gives us an opportunity to remember the millions of Jews and people from minority communities that were murdered during the Holocaust, and the victims of other genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
It’s a time for reflection and remembrance, and education, encouraging people worldwide to learn about the horrors of the Holocaust, to recognise groups that continue to have restrictions placed on their freedoms and to honour the victims, and work towards preventing such atrocities in the future.
Holocaust Memorial Day emphasises the importance of promoting tolerance, understanding, and combating prejudice and discrimination.
