An update on Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) on campus
26 Jan 2024
Structural Engineers have completed detailed visual inspections followed by intrusive investigations and confirmed that all areas within Schuster building remain safe to occupy
The University has now completed its detailed inspection of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) panels within the Schuster building.
Schuster is the only building on campus currently identified as containing RAAC in six locations. The appointed Structural Engineers have completed detailed visual inspections followed by intrusive investigations and confirmed that all areas remain safe to occupy. Condition monitoring has been scheduled at set intervals of three and six months in accordance with our RAAC management plan.
Our approach to managing RAAC follows guidance published by the Health and Safety Executive and Institute of Structural Engineers. The condition of panels with any mitigation and monitoring is recorded in the University's RAAC register.
The wider validation inspection programme across the University estate is on target to be completed by 30 June 2024. No further RAAC has been identified elsewhere on campus to date outside of that reported in the Schuster building.
