24 Jan 2024
Georgina Lewis-Vasco from the School of Social Sciences and judge for the Distinguished Achievement Awards discuses the importance of diversity and inclusion when judging an award.
“It’s a really nice thing to be able to be involved in”, Georgina says about judging the Distinguished Achievement Awards. “It’s lovely to see the comradery, the team spirit, the hard work, and some of the amazing work that people do."
Georgina Lewis-Vasco is the School Operations Manager in the School of Social Sciences and first got involved with the Distinguished Achievement Awards three years ago. Georgina had been a co-chair of the BAME staff network and wanted to offer her perspective to make sure everybody across the university was being included.
“Previously I don’t think there was a lot of diversity in terms of the quality of applications and the backgrounds of the people who were being nominated, and also in the grades.
“We’re all very aware of how important it is to represent everybody at the university and that there’s amazing work being done at all grades.”
Nominations for the Professional Services and Cultural Institutions category in the Distinguished Achievement Awards close on Friday 2 February, with other awards coordinated by the faculties.
“If you’ve got somebody in your part of the business that is doing really good work make sure you nominate them” Georgina says. “Make sure you give them an opportunity to be rewarded for the good work they’re doing”.
Watch the short video above to hear from Georgina on why you should make a nomination and what the judges are looking for.
