WATCH: Stephen Hamer on judging a Distinguished Achievement Award
19 Jan 2024
Stephen Hamer from the Faculty of Science and Engineering and judge for the Distinguished Achievement Awards explains why you should nominate a colleague and what the judges are looking for.
Stephen Hamer has been with the University for 30 years. “I’ve had quite a flavoured career and enjoyed every bit of it”, Stephen says.
“I started as a technician to redesign projects in the laboratories in physics and astronomy. One of the first students in the laboratory we were redesigning was Professor Brian Cox”.
Stephen received a Distinguished Achievement Award in its inaugural year back in 2010 and was asked to be a judge in 2011. Stephen has been on the panel every year since.
"It’s a really good thing for the university" Stephen says about the awards, "It brings out all the principles, all the goals that we have.
“What I’m trying to encourage as a judge on the panel is to look for people who have a real can do attitude, they go the extra distance, get an end result and have influenced and helped a lot of people."
Watch the short video above to hear from Stephen on why you should make a nomination and what the judges are looking for.
