Call for Diagrams: UoM Bicentenary Diagrams Collection
19 Dec 2023
You are invited to submit a diagram for a special Bicentenary Diagrams Collection (1824-2024)
To mark the University's Bicentenary in 2024, we will be assembling a collection of diagrams that have been used as a method of communicating the University's interdisciplinary research over the past 200 years.
"A picture tells a thousand words"
Diagrams have been used throughout history to convey a meaning or tell a story, from early cave scratchings and Egyptian hieroglyphics to modern day classics like the London Underground map. For this special Bicentenary project, the University's archives and special collections have uncovered some remarkable diagrams which were key to UoM research and innovation. These materials relate to scientific, architectural, engineering and Nobel prize-winning drawings. Over the years, these diagrams have enabled sophisticated visual representations and complex ideas to be communicated in an accessible way.
Invitation to get involved:
This project is led by Guy Marshall, who has conducted diagrams research with The University of Manchester, to help bridge the gap between business and theoretical research. In conjunction with the Creative Manchester Research Platform and Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine we invite you to submit diagrams of your own, for consideration in this very special Bicentenary Diagrams Collection (1824-2024).
Judges include: John McAuliffe, Caroline Jay, James Sumner, Martin Dodge, Guy Marshall.
