Happy Hanukkah

The Hebrew word Hanukkah means dedication and celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple in the second century BCE. 

It is tradition to light a candle, which is then placed in a menorah, each day of the festival. In total, eight candles are lit. The shamash, a master candle, is used to light the other candles.   

Food and gifts 

Traditional celebratory foods include food fried in oil for example doughnuts and potato latkes which symbolise the miracle of the oil remaining lit for eight nights.  

Each night, children are given gifts or money called Hannukah gelt. 

Events 

All staff, students and the wider community are invited to take part in a public lighting of the menorah in Brunswick Park (outside Simon Building) at 5pm on Thursday, 7 December.
