Giving Tuesday - Thank you for your generosity

28 Nov 2023

Giving Tuesday takes place on Tuesday, 28 November and is the international day of giving back

Over the past year, many of our colleagues have supported our local, national and international good causes.

We want to take the opportunity to thank you for all your generosity, be it volunteering in your local community, joining a Social Responsibility programme, taking on a fundraising challenge, or taking advantage of our Payroll Giving Scheme which has seen over £135,106.09 donated to great causes over the past year – your gifts really do make a difference.

Your giving

This year, colleagues have joined students, alumni and friends to support causes at the University and beyond. Your donations have helped to:

  • Increase the hardship funding available for students during the cost-of-living crisis;
  • Provide scholarships to help bright people from all backgrounds study at the University;
  • Create the new world-leading Paterson cancer research building, which is specially designed to speed up the fight against cancer;
  • Support life-changing research into critical areas like cancer, stroke, poverty and climate change.

Jemma Roper Gurr, Head of Supporter Engagement said: “Over the past year, I’ve been blown away by the generosity of colleagues across the University. From fundraising to support our research through the Purple Wave to making use of our Purple Giving opportunities – hundreds of staff have shown their support. Every penny goes directly to helping good causes here at the University. Thank you.”

Booth Centre, a community centre run with people affected by homelessness, said: “Thank you for your generous support of the Booth Centre through the payroll giving scheme. Your generous contributions of £1,710.72 have directly supported 350 people out of homelessness and into accommodation, employment, and training this year alone. Your kindness has brought hope and community to individuals facing difficult times and allowed us to continue our vital work amidst the cost-of-living crisis and increasing demand for our support. Thank you for your compassion and dedication to creating positive change for people affected by homelessness in our community!”
