Stonewall Workplace Equality Index survey
27 Nov 2023
Share your views on how inclusive we are for LGBT+ colleagues
Every year our University submits to the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, which measures how inclusive we are for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT+) colleagues.
We are proud to have been placed in the Top 100 Employers list since 2015, and would like this to continue in 2024.
A very important part of the process is gauging how LGBT+ and non-LGBT+ staff view the University and how inclusive we actually are. To do this we are asking people to complete the anonymous five-minute survey provided by Stonewall.
As this is worth 10% of our overall total, it’s really important that we have as much participation as possible.
We will submit our application to the Workplace Equality Index at the end of the month, but the survey remains open until friday, 15 December 2023, so there is still plenty of time to complete this.
Adèle MacKinlay, Director of People and OD, said: "As you are aware, participation in this survey is so important in order that we can see how inclusive we are viewed, as an organisation, from a LGBT+ perspective. We’ve made great strides over the years in areas such as making our policies, guidance, and information fully inclusive to our LGBT+ staff and improved information on data disclose and confidentiality – but we realise we can do even better in these areas and beyond.
"Perhaps our most important priority is to ensure that we live our values, particularly ‘humanity’ across all employee and student groups. Understanding the perspective of all our people (including LGBT+) we can ensure we do this going forward."
As Stonewall puts it: “To assess the impact of organisational practice on LGBT inclusion in your workplace, Stonewall seeks feedback directly from your employees. In the survey we ask your employees questions around key indicators of inclusion in your workplace – examining both LGBT+ and non-LGBT+ employee experiences, opinions and attitudes.”

Importance of data
Monitoring our numbers of LGBT+ staff is essential for promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, identifying potential discrimination and ensuring equal opportunities with the University. The more accurate our data is, the more improved targeted campaigns we can run and also look at addressing under-representation for LGBT+ staff. Currently we only know 67% of people’s sexual orientation – help improve this by checking and updating your details in MyView.
