Changes in working patterns and practices and productivity in North West firms

Assuming the demand from some employees for increased flexibility, opportunities for remote and hybrid working and even a four-day working week is sustained or grows, how should companies respond? How can they maximise the benefits to productivity of new forms of working whilst minimising the potential downside? What are the implications of new forms of working for the productivity of companies in the North West economy?

This panel event, organised by the North West Productivity Forum, will explore these issues.

Following this event, there will be a networking lunch and the opportunity to attend the re-launch of the Scale-Up Forum where you will have the opportunity to hear about the regional and national scale-up and productivity landscape. Deputy President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Luke Georghiou will present the welcome address.

Tuesday, 5 December - 6:30pm

When missions fail: lessons in ‘high technology’ from post-war Britain

Tom Kelsey’s new report When Missions Fail: lessons in ‘high technology’ from post-war Britain suggests we can learn more about industrial strategy from the troubled British case than the much-vaunted example of the United States.

In this lecture, Tom will talk about his findings and suggest that any serious strategy for ‘high technology’ in the UK must primarily focus on working with allies and international business, and be wary of the attention placed on sustaining national capabilities.

Vital Topics: A nature-positive economy

As demands on our planet continue to grow, there is a consensus that Nature must be considered as an active stakeholder – with some arguing that Nature should have a place on the board. This argument goes beyond traditional viewpoints of social responsibility or ESG.

Join the CEO of the RSPB Beccy Speight, one of the largest nature conservation charities in the world, as she discusses the approach of building a nature positive economy.

Debating the topic will be Professor Paolo Quattrone, on how finance needs to include nature as a physical stakeholder alongside investors and shareholders.
