Celebrating our Manchester Access Programme success

04 Oct 2023

We’re delighted that 483 students have successfully completed the Manchester Access Programme (MAP) this year

Manchester Access Programme

We received hundreds of positive comments about the programme from students, including the following:

"MAP has made me more confident about the idea of starting University and having to write essays. The academic assignment included research using the Manchester online library and use Harvard referencing to write essays which was very useful as we do not learn this in college and I can apply what I have learnt during this assignment in all my future essays at University. I also enjoyed MAP as I made lots of new friends from different colleges who were in the same position as me. Overall, MAP has benefitted me both academically and socially."

"Every member of staff was really positive, kind and made me feel comfortable with both the assignment and the on campus modules."

"Before entering MAP, I was truly lost and had no confidence in my post 18 studies. With the help I got from my tutor and the map team I felt at ease and that this scary part of life isn’t so scary."

What is MAP?

The Manchester Access Programme (MAP) is our University’s central widening participation scheme for local Year 12 students in Greater Manchester.

The aim of the programme is to support students in their application to our University, or other research-intensive universities, and to help equip them with the necessary skills to be successful undergraduates.

In order to pass MAP, students had to complete four compulsory modules, including writing a 1,500-word Academic Assignment on a subject of their choice. All MAP students were supported with writing their assignment by one of our 155 fantastic MAP Tutors, who held two 1-1 meetings with them and provided valuable feedback on a draft before the final submission.

We also hosted a number of optional events for students, often in partnership with teams from the wider university, such as the ‘Managing Your Money at University’ ‘Get to Know Your Digital Capabilities’, ‘Get to Know the Library’, ‘Medicine and Dentistry Conference’ events, just to name a few.

What are the benefits of MAP?

Our 483 MAP students will receive a 2-grade differential offer from our University (dependent on their strand, and excluding foundation year courses), and will receive the Undergraduate Access Scholarship if they come to our University.

MAP 2024

We also received constructive feedback from students, which will be fed in to our upcoming MAP 2024 planning sessions.

Our eligibility criteria for MAP 2024 has now been published on our webpages, and applications will open in early November.

  • We will be recruiting for MAP Tutors in January. PhD students and lecturers at our University can register their interest
