UCU strike ballot opens today (Tuesday 19th September)

The University and College Union (UCU) is to commence a national, aggregated ballot of its members today, Tuesday 19th September, closing on Friday 3 November 2023.
The University and College Union (UCU) is to commence a national, aggregated ballot of its members today, Tuesday 19th September, closing on Friday 3 November 2023, with the results expected shortly thereafter.
The ballot is seeking to gain a new mandate to allow the potential for further industrial action in an ongoing dispute over pay and conditions, once the existing mandate for strike action concludes at the end of September.
The right of colleagues to consider further action is of course clearly recognised, but we continue to be extremely concerned about the prospect of further strike action and the potential impact on our community and the entire higher education sector, particularly on students who have suffered so much over recent years including through the recent Marking and Assessment boycott.
It is worth restating that negotiations on pay are conducted at a national level, so we are unable to make changes on our own, though we do maintain a strong voice in sector negotiations.
