Eccles Metrolink line engineering works: Eccles New Road
05 Jul 2023
From Saturday, 15 July to Thursday, 21 September, major rail replacement work is planned to take place on the Eccles Metrolink line along Eccles New Road between the Ladywell and Weaste Metrolink stops
Metrolink works
The work follows a condition assessment undertaken by TfGM (Transport for Greater Manchester) and will comprise the replacement of 1,700 metres of worn rails. Options for delaying the work until 2024 were explored, but to ensure the safe and long-term operation of the Eccles Metrolink line it is not feasible for the replacement of the worn rails to be delayed until then.
Lane closures and traffic diversions on Eccles New Road
Partial, temporary lane closures and traffic management will be required along the highway on Eccles New Road from Saturday, 15 July to Thursday, 21 September, which has been arranged and agreed with Salford City Council. Signed diversions will be in place for road users and lane closures are planned to be phased to mitigate the impact. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.
Metrolink tram services
In addition to the works, from Saturday, 15 July to Thursday, 21 September there will be no tram service between Eccles tram stop and Weaste tram stop. Ashton line services will continue to operate via Manchester city centre through to Weaste during this time, and both the MediaCity and Trafford Park lines will not be affected. TfGM will mitigate Metrolink service disruption as much as possible and a Metrolink replacement bus service will operate between Eccles and Weaste tram stops. Customers will be updated through TfGM communications and customer channels and platforms, including on-stop posters, passenger announcements and passenger information displays, website updates, customer social media posts and newsletters.
