The conference aims to bring together colleagues from across the university and beyond to showcase and celebrate best practice in teaching and learning, to engage in meaningful discussions, and to build networks and collaboration opportunities.
While in person tickets are already sold out, colleagues are invited to join us for the Plenary Sessions of the conference which will be livestreamed.
We are also recording standard paper presentations and these will be made available on the Conference website, alongside reflective blog entries from attendees, and the outcomes of wicked problem set sessions run on the day.
Plenary 1, 9.30-10.15am: Challenging Racialised Inequalities in Higher Education
In this session a panel of expert staff and students from the University of Manchester and beyond will discuss their own work on challenging racialised inequalities in Higher Education. The panel will provide a series of challenges and suggested changes that conference attendees can reflect and act on in their own teaching. The session will be chaired by Dr Safina Islam, Director of the University’s Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE (Race Archives and Community Engagement) Centre. The panel consists of Dr Paul Ian Campbell (Director of the University of Leicester Institute for Inclusivity in Higher Education), Dr Esnath Magola-Makina (Clinical Lecturer in Pharmacy, and working on differential attainment in the School of Health Sciences), and Dr Asieh Yousefnejad Shomali (postdoctoral research associate on the University of Manchester’s Degree Awarding Gap and Differential Attainment Project) and several students from Asieh’s Differential Attainment team.
Plenary 2, 3.45 till 4.30: Student's Union panel on Student Voice
In this second plenary session we will conclude the conference by asking our expert panel the all-important questions about student voice, including how we demonstrate meaningful change at an institution of our size and how we address the inevitable power imbalance that exists between staff and students. The plenary will be hosted by the Student Union’s Faculty of Science and Engineering Officer, Shauna Rogers, who will be putting questions to our three panel members - Students' Union Education Manager, Emma Bramwell; Faculty Lead (Student Experience and Inclusion) for FBMH, Nicholas Weise; and a member of the team from HE policy experts WONKHE. The session ends with a closing address from Associate Vice President for Teaching, Learning and Students, Professor Judy Williams.
