Manchester Arena terror attack anniversary

Two one-minute silences will take place at Manchester Victoria Station on Monday, 22 May – at 12 noon and 22.31pm, the exact anniversary of the attack six years ago

Manchester is preparing to mark the 6th anniversary of the 22 May 2017 terror attack which claimed 22 lives and left many others injured.

The focal point for personal remembrance and reflection will be the city centre Glade of Light memorial, which was officially opened last May by the now Prince and Princess of Wales ahead of the fifth anniversary. Civic representatives will lay a floral tribute to those who lost their lives on Monday, 22 May and also remembering all who were injured or otherwise affected.

Annual cleaning and maintenance work to the memorial will take place from Monday, 15 to Friday, 19 May 2023 inclusive to ensure it looks its best for the anniversary for anyone who wishes to mark the anniversary. The marble halo will be temporarily fenced off while these works take place.  

Candles will also be available for people to light at Manchester Victoria Station.

The names of those who lost their lives will also be read out on 22 May during services at 9am (Morning Prayers), 1.10pm (Holy Communion) and 5.30pm (Choral Evensong.) The cathedral will be open throughout the day for those who wish to light a candle or pray.  

Council Leader Cllr Bev Craig said: “It’s hard to believe six years has passed since the terrible events of 22 May 2017 and our hearts continue to go out those who lost their lives, their loved ones, those who were injured and everyone still dealing in some way with the legacy of that day. We know 22 May will always be a poignant day for many people.

“Manchester will not forget them.”
