Teaching and Learning Conference 2023 - call for contributors
13 Apr 2023
The Institute of Teaching and Learning is excited to announce the first University of Manchester Teaching and Learning Conference on Thursday, 6 July 2023
This will be a one-day, flexible, free internal conference focusing on teaching and learning at our University. More information on the venue and format of the day to be announced.
It is open to presentations and participation from all students and staff and will showcase effective practice, drive discussion around teaching and learning and facilitate networks and collaboration.
Call for contributors
We are inviting papers from all staff and students on the following conference themes.
- Student partnership and the student voice: How can we approach teaching and learning in partnership with our students, ensuring their perspective, experience and potential is fully embraced. How do we differentiate between consultation and co-creation, ensuring the right approach for our aims and our students?
- Exploring Assessment: What should effective and authentic assessment look like at UoM? What practices, process and pedagogy can we use to ensure assessment and importantly feedback on assessment supports learning? What methods, tools and practice do we, or should we use to ensure our assessments are inclusive, secure and reliable? How do current changes in technology, including AI assistance, impact assessment?
- Sustainable Change: the future of T&L in HE: Higher Education's self-image is inextricably linked to teaching and learning, but it exists within the wider discourses around sustainability, equity and access. What do we imagine will be the teaching and learning of the future? Who will take part in its delivery, creation and development? What will it change about the world around it? What role are staff and students, at the University of Manchester, playing in making these changes?
Submission format:
Submissions are invited from individuals or teams and should be proposed in any of the following formats:
- Wicked Problem Sets – One hour sessions in which the speaker introduces an issue/big question linked to the themes of the conference with a brief presentation. Participants will act as an action learning set, joining in a roundtable discussion on the topic and putting together a summary of thoughts and recommendations at the end.
- Standard paper presentations – Paper presentation on a specific topic, 15-20 minutes in length with five minutes for questions.
- Poster presentations – Posters will be exhibited on the day and presenters will be asked to give a short spoken presentation on their poster. Posters will also be made available via an online gallery after the conference.
- Lightning talks – Up to five minutes, maximum of 20 slides submitted as either part of the Superfan strand (lightning talks on things you love), or Hits and Misses strand (lightning talks on successes and failures).
Your submission should outline who is participating, what the format is, your abstract and an explanation of how it connects to the themes.
Deadline for submissions: 5pm Tuesday, 18 April.
