Huge success for inaugural Engineering the Future conference

Hosted by the School of Engineering and the Department of Materials this first of its kind event has showcased our engineering research and teaching

The two-day Engineering the Future Conference welcomed over 400 guests last month.

Attendees took part in a variety of lectures, panel discussions and exhibits. These have explored the ways we are shaping the future through our research and our education of the next generation of engineers, including how we are contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

This inaugural event was held in the new home of Engineering and Materials. This is a place like no other, and one of the largest higher education construction projects completed in the UK. This new part of the campus is made up of five buildings, Engineering Buildings A and B, Oddfellows Hall, James Chadwick Building and York Street Building.

Tours of the purpose-built experimental facilities, including a large wave tank that is being used to accelerate the deployment of offshore renewables, to laboratories focused on electromagnetic techniques being used for a range of purposes from de-mining to airport security, were also very popular with attendees. 

Professor Alice Larkin, Head of School for Engineering, said: “This was a rare chance to showcase the breadth of our inspiring research and educational activities, so we were delighted to see so many of our community and our external partners joining in. This couldn’t have happened without those who led and participated in the sessions and the teams who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make it a success, so a huge thank you to everyone”.
