Recycle your old or unwanted pairs of trainers
05 Apr 2023
UoM Sport has announced a partnership with JogOn, to help reduce the amount of trainers and running shoes being sent to landfill
Over 30+ million pairs of shoes end up in landfill every year and the aim of the JogOn scheme is to reduce this number.
Where possible, donated shoes are given to those in need, through distribution by partners in 11 hubs around the world. Where reuse is not an option, the shoes are shredded and their remains reused for other purposes.
There are now two collection points on campus for colleagues and students to drop off their old or unused trainers:
- The ‘Want not Waste’ shop between the Academy and the Students' Union is open 10am until 2pm, Monday to Friday
- The Armitage Sports Centre in Fallowfield, which is open seven days a week.
To donate your trainers, all you need to do is tie the shoes together by the laces - or use a cord or elastic band and then place them in one of the collection points.
JogOn are hoping the partnership will lead to more sites across Manchester joining in the scheme, so why not ask your local gym, sports centre or sports club if they want to get involved?
