Staying safe on campus

22 Mar 2023

A reminder that you can download the SafeZone app - designed to help keep you safe and give you extra peace of mind on campus

What is SafeZone?

SafeZone is a free to download mobile app and is available on Apple Store and Google Play.

You can use SafeZone to quickly call for help and directly connect you to the appropriate safety or security team, who will provide the assistance you need. It works not only on our campus, but in the areas of Fallowfield and Victoria Park, Manchester Metropolitan University campus and the University of Salford campus. This geographical area is known as the Manchester SafeZone Alliance.

Our Campus Support and Security

The Campus Support and Security team provides support and advice on campus and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your safety is their top priority, so make sure you get in touch if you need help.

  • To report any on-campus incidents, contact the Security Control Room 0161 306 9966.
  • If you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate to contact the team.
  • Call 999 in the event of a life-threatening emergency, or if you, or someone you’re with, requires immediate medical attention. If you call 999, please also let the team know.

Keeping your personal belongings safe

Our campus is a very safe place to study, work and socialise, and crime at our University accounts for a very small percentage of incidents that occur. But it’s important to take some simple steps to keep your personal belongings safe.

Bikes, computers and other valuables such as phones tend to be the main targets for theft. Items are often stolen when they’ve been left unattended in areas such as libraries, lecture theatres, and café’s. Keep your personal belongings with you at all times.

Our cycle registration scheme offers free bike marking, and owner and cycle details are recorded on a national database that can be accessed by the police. In the event of a bike being stolen and recovered, the owner can be traced.

Once registered, staff and students are eligible to purchase a gold standard D lock at a discounted price.

We also offer free permit access to campus cycle shelters to staff and postgraduate researchers. To obtain access, please visit the Car Park Permit Office with your ID card to get it activated.
