Your Purple Pennies causes: Wood Street Mission

In February 2023, colleagues across the University voted for three charitable causes to receive support from our new Purple Pennies scheme.   

Purple Pennies is a micro-donation scheme that allows you to donate the pennies from your salary towards charitable causes. It will launch on Monday, 27 March.  

The three causes supported by Purple Pennies will be:  

• Supporting Manchester’s cancer research  
• Helping disadvantaged students  
• Wood Street Mission  

Wood Street Mission  

What’s it all about?  

Wood Street Mission is a children’s charity helping children and families living on a low income in Manchester and Salford. They provide practical help to meet children’s day-to-day needs and improve their life chances.  

Staff at the University have supported Wood Street Mission for many years through donations and collections of gifts at Christmas, supporting the Wood Street Mission Books Forever campaign, raising close to £37,000 from the staff lottery since 2007 and over £2,551.01through payroll giving.  

What difference will Purple Pennies make?  

100% of donations received through the Purple Pennies scheme will enable Wood Street Mission to help thousands of local children each year whose families struggle to make ends meet.  

Your support through this scheme will enable Wood Street Mission to help make day to day life a little easier, to brighten up special occasions like Christmas, and to help support local children’s education to improve their life chances for the future.    

Are there any other ways to get involved?  

Yes! You can organise your own fundraising activity by contacting the team supporters@manchester.ac.uk.   

If you’d like to support this or any other cause you care about with a regular monthly donation, you can do so tax-free via our University payroll giving scheme. With this scheme a £10 a month donation would only cost you £8.

There are also a number of volunteering opportunities avialable.
